I was out in the sun/water yesterday and all my sunscreen washed away. Today, I’m cranberry red and really tender and sore. I can barely move. I can’t tell if my sunburn is second degree.

usually the dermatologyst will tell how, since they will check your skin, and ask you to be careful about melanoma
if you devolop blisters then it is second degree if it is red and hurts it is 1st degree
if it becoms like a hard leathery shell then it’s second degree.
When you peel your skin off you will see 2nd degree written on the 2nd layer.
If you have blisters then your sunburn is REALLY bad. If it peels then it’s worse than your average rosy-cheeked day at the beach. sounds like you got a pretty painful, but not life threatening case. Aloe will help. But your main concern now is not letting this happen too often. Frequent sunburns will lead to skin cancer. Remember-waterproof sunscreen, and reapply as often as it says on the directions. Don’t bother with any sunscreen over spf30 because it doesn’t work any better. And lastly-a T-shirt works as spf15 =) feel better!
Puss filled blisters on the burn are a sure sign of 2nd degree burns. Another sign is that the burn hurts so much, it is torture to put on a shirt. Fever and nausea also accompany 1st and 2nd degree burns.
You probably have a very severe 1st degree burn.
